אֲסִיתָאf. (אסי = עסי, עסס; cmp. דּוּךְ a. מְדֹכָה) 1) mortar. Sabb.77b (playful etym.) א׳ חסירתא ed. a. Var. Ar., it is called ăsitha because it is caved out (Ms. M. a. Ar. חסידתא pious, submitting to blows). Ḥull.105b א׳ ובוכנא דתבלי mortar and pestle for spices.
