אֲסִיתָאf. (אסי = עסי, עסס; cmp. דּוּךְ a. מְדֹכָה) 1) mortar. Sabb.77b (playful etym.) א׳ חסירתא ed. a. Var. Ar., it is called ăsitha because it is caved out (Ms. M. a. Ar. חסידתא pious, submitting to blows). Ḥull.105b א׳ ובוכנא דתבלי mortar and pestle for spices. Nidd.36b (Issi playing on his name) I am א׳ רנחשא a brazen mortar.Keth.49b בפו ליה א׳וכ׳ invert for him a mortar in public (improvise a stand) and let him stand up M. Kat. 22b כפי א׳ invert thou a mortar 2) (from its shape) hip-bone, pelvic bone. Hull. 52a בוכנא וא׳ the pestle and the mortar, i. e. the rib sitting in the hip-bone and the hip-bone. 3) (cmp. Nidd. l. c.) trnsf. hard-hearted woman. Gen. R. s. 17; Lev. R. s. 34 שבוק הדא א׳ Ar. (ed. אנתתא, איתתא בישא; Yalk. Lev. 665; Is. 352 איתתא) divorce that mean woman.
